The Southern Appalachian Conservancy has recently purchased a 95 acre portion of Lost Cove in the remote Nolichucky Gorge in Yancey County. Lost Cove was an isolated settlement dating back to the Civil War and became legendary with stories of families and hard working men and women who once called it home. Some of the original residents of Lost Cove still live in the area today so that is one reason why it was so important for local organizations like the Southern Appalachian Conservancy and the North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association, who help maintain a trail into the cove, to be involved in the preservation of the rugged land. The recently purchased property is visible from the Nolichucky River as well as a portion of the Appalachian Trail.
