Chris Deyton, County Maintenance Engineer for Yancey and Mitchell Counties, said that as of Thursday all roads in Yancey County are open for traffic after nearly a week’s worth of cleanup at several locations across the county. Crews from the NC Department of Transportation have been working vigorously to clear several tons of rock and mud from a slide on Hwy 19W about 12 miles from Cane River. The DOT was able to remove a huge rock the size of a small house which slid into the roadway last Wednesday after heavy rains had weakened the area near the river. Crews drilled holes in the large boulder using an expandable grout which broke the rock apart so that it could be removed by the DOT and local contractors. Workers were able to reopen the road on Tuesday afternoon. Deyton said that road crews are still cleaning some debris left from the storm in other small slides across Yancey County.
