Lady Cougar varsity basketball fans received some bad news last week when it was learned that last year’s Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year, Brianna Woody, will be lost for the season due to a knee injury the senior standout suffered two weeks ago.
Woody, who was averaging 14 points per game and 8 rebounds when she went down in the team’s only loss of the season 54-50 to Avery County, was not in the lineup for league games on the road at Hendersonville and Polk County last week.
"The girls hate what has happened to Brianna but they know that they have to pull together and they have to pull together and it will take all of them stepping up to finish what we have started," Lady Cougar Coach Susie Shelton said of her team's reaction to the injury to its star player.
The Lady Cougars banded together to improve to 18-1 overall and 8-1 in Western Highlands play with lopsided wins over the Lady Bearcats and Wolverines.
Kaylon Johnson nailed six three pointers and scored twenty points to lead the Lady Cougars to a 67-23 win at Hendersonville on Tuesday.
Heritage bolted to a big first quarter lead and was never challenged by the Bearcats as Destiny Elkins (16 points) Samm Chandler (14 points) and Nyssa Freeman (12 points) all stepped up to help Johnson pour on the points against winless Hendersonville.
Heritage whittled out a 19-12 lead after the first eight minutes in Columbus on Thursday night and by halftime the game was over as the Lady Cougars led Polk County by 16 points.
Sophomore center Destiny Elkins had her best game of the season against the Lady Bearcats, scoring 21 points to lead the Lady Cougars who also got god performances from Samm Chandler (15 points), Kaylon Johnson (13 points) and Nyssa Freeman (8 points) as the Heritage seniors continue to step up their games and produce victories for MHHS.
The Lady Cougars hope to hone their skills as the WHC tournament and the 2A state playoffs draw near with games this week with Owen at home on Tuesday and at Thomas Jefferson Academy on Friday.
