Cougar JV boys remain atop league standingsThe Heritage JV boys kept their unblemished mark in Western Highlands Conference intact last week with a tough fought win over Hendersonville and a much easier win over Polk County in two road trips down I26.
It was a game that went back worth throughout, Hendersonville hit 9 of their first 10 shots to take a 24-15 lead after the first quarter.
After the Bearcats scored the opening basket of the second quarter, the Cougars went on to a 15-0 run to grab a 30-26 lead. The score was knotted at 30-30 at halftime.
The two teams continued to battle into the second half as the score went back and forth until the middle of the third quarter, when the Heritage defense sparked an 8-0 run to give the Cougars some breathing room with a 50-40 lead going into the 4th.
Hendersonville chipped away in the final seven minute session and cut the lead to 56-51on a three pointer with 1:18 left in the game on a play that saw sophomore leader Brennan Hockaday foul out.
Nick Chandler hit both ends of a 1 and 1 to give Heritage a five point lead and after a Hendersonville missed 3 pointer, Jared Sellers grabbed the rebound and passed ahead to Gray McCurry who was fouled. McCurry nailed both ends of the 1-1to extend the Cougar lead to 58-51.
But Hendersonville kept coming and with 41.8 seconds left, the Bearcats drilled a 3 pointer to cut it to 58-54.
After Hendersonville grabbed the rebound of a missed front end of a one and one by Gray McCurry, Job Kennedy slapped the ball out of the Bearcats hands and Gray McCurry went to the on the floor to get the steal and a timeout with 31.3 seconds left. Colton Garland then calmly hits 1 of 2 free throws to give Heritage a 59-54 lead.
Nick Chandler sealed the deal with a steal on the next Hendersonville possession, His pass to Colton Garland puts the freshman wingman on the foul line where he nails one of two shots for a 60-54 Cougar lead.
The Bearcats quickly score to cut it to 60-56 with 4.3 seconds left.
A Gray McCurry assists to Nick Chandler puts the icing on the cake as Chandler nails a free throw to round out the scoring at 61-56 before time expires.
Hockaday paced the team with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals while Job Kennedy also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
In a 62-46 win over Polk County on Thursday night in Columbus, Brennan Hockaday (11) and Gray McCurry(7) combined for 18 of the Cougar’s first 22 pts in the first quarter as Heritage led by 10 after the first seven minutes of play.
Luke Antinori, Bryson Cooper, Colton Garland, Job Kennedy, and Nick Chandler came off the bench in the 2nd quarter to give Heritage energy and a big lift to help them to a 40-21 lead the half.
Andrew Hall had an old-fashioned three point play midway through the 3rd to help lift Heritage to a 27 point lead at the end of the quarter.
Cougar reserves played well in the 4th quarter and received valuable playing time as Heritage rolled to a 16 point win.
Heritage had three players to score in double figures. Brennan Hockaday led the charge with 19 while Gray McCurry contributed 14 and Colton Garland added 10.
Job Kennedy led rebounding with 10, Gray Mccurry had 7 steals and 8 assist while Jared Sellers paced the team with 4 blocked shots while Job Kennedy had 3 blocks.
Heritage hoop teams will host Owen on Tuesday while the Cougars will hit the road to Thomas Jefferson Academy on Friday.
