Storms Batter Area for Second Straight Week

Heavy rains for the second straight week have kept road crews busy clearing mudslides and other debris from the roadways in Yancey and Mitchell Counties. Upwards of four inches of rainfall fell in parts of the area Wednesday causing some minor flooding. Yancey County Emergency Management Director Bill Davis said Thursday morning that calls continue to trickle in to his office from residents reporting some water in roadways, a few down trees and a couple of small slides that need attention. Davis reported high water problems on Prices Creek and Whittington Road while saying that Monroe King Road, off Hwy 19W, had to be closed for a period of time Wednesday night to give water from the Cane River a chance to recede. The only incident of flooding in Mitchell County was reported at Ingles Market in Spruce Pine but that water has also receded, according to Mitchell Communications. Road crews now must turn their attention to snow removal as wintertime revisits the area for the next few days with light snow expected.
