Heritage (20-1, 10-1 WHC) found themselves in a tussle with visiting Owen in a game that came down to the free throw line on Tuesday night.
Heritage eked out a one point lead after the first eight minutes as the Warlassies scored the final six points of the quarter.
Heritage spread the ball around in the second stanza and behind baskets by Destiny Elkins, Abby Renfro, Kaylon Johnson, Samm Chandler, Abby Bailey and free throw from Nyssa Freeman the Lady Cougars were able to open up an eight point cushion at the half.
The Lady Cougars maintained a six point lead heading into the 4th and after getting into the double bonus early, Nyssa Freeman nailed eight straight free throws to allow Heritage to pull away for a 53-45 win.
Freeman finished with 16 points to lead the Lady Cougars while Samm Chandler, who also hit key free throws down the stretch, scored 12 points. Kaylon Johnson, the Lady Cougars primary outside threat, also scored 12 points, including a couple of three pointers.
In their trip down the mountain to Rutherford County on Thursday, Heritage returned to Yancey County with an easy 72-19 victory.
Heritage got points from nine of ten players on the roster in the blowout, led by double figure scoring from Abby Bailey, who paced the team with 13 points, Samm Chandler, who netted 12 points, and Nyssa Freeman and Kaylon Johnson who netted 11 points apiece
Abby Renfro added 8 points, Destiny Elkins chipped in 7 while Kendyl Neill and Haley Crane, who was brought up from the JV squad for the Lady Cougars final push, scored 4 points each for the Lady Cougars.
Come out and show your support this week as Cougar hoops teams wind down the regular season. JV games begin at 4:00 with varsity action getting underway around 6:30.
