Heritage Varsity Girls Basketball Suffers Another Loss To Lady Vikings

Lady Cougars stumble at Avery County
Heading into Tuesday night's regular-season finale against Madison, the Lady Cougar varsity team sits in second place in the Western Highlands Conference standings, and a win over the Lady Patriots would give them some momentum as the No. 2 seed for next week's WHC Tournament at Mitchell High.
The Lady Cougars are looking to recover from a tough road loss at Avery County on Friday night.
The Lady Vikings (17-5, 13-1) have had the Lady Cougar’s number this season, handing Heritage (21-1, 11-2) only its second loss of the season, 65-57 in Newland this past week.
Heritage opened the game with strong play on both sides of the court and attacked the basket to bolt to an 11-1 lead in the first five minutes of the contest following a three pointer by Kaylon Johnson.  Heritage led by ten points after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Avery’s leading scorer Lauren Burleson went to work and brought some energy to the Lady Vikings. Burleson led an Avery County comeback as the Lady Vikings used a commanding rebounding advantage to cut the Heritage led to 27-23 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Avery County took its first lead of the game on two Burleson free throws to cap a 6-0 Lady Viking run midway through the third quarter, and the Vikings held a 40-32 advantage heading into the fourth.
The Lady Cougars would get no closer as starters Nyssa Freeman, Kaylon Johnson and Samm Chandler all fouled out in the 4th quarter as Avery held on for the eight point win.
Destiny Elkins led three Heritage players scoring in double figures in a rout of Mitchell on Tuesday on senior night in Burnsville. Her 18 points came on a variety of shots around the basket, while seniors Kaylon Johnson and Samm Chandler netted 16 points apiece for the Lady Cougars.
Elkins added 11 rebounds to her stats while Chandler registered 4 steals and 3 blocked shots and Johnson tallied 6 steals and 4 assist.
Abby Bailey, who led the team in scoring with 13 points in the win over Thomas Jefferson, came away with 7 steals and 5 points against the Lady Mountaineers. Nyssa Freeman also added 8 pts and 5 assists to the winning effort.
Kaylon Johnson tied the school record for three pointers in a recent game against Hendersonville with 6.  She also broke the record for most 3 pointers in a season for Heritage in the game against Thomas Jefferson. The record was 43.  Johnson hit three, 3 pointers against the Gryphons. She now has a total of 51 three pointers for the season.
