36-year-old Christie Boyer was the driver of the Yancey County Transportation Authority van that crashed Tuesday afternoon, killing 48-year-old Billy Grindstaff. Highway patrol troopers are still investigating the accident that occurred on 19E near Sycamore Circle Road in Newdale but now say that charges against Boyer are pending after they receive a blood test analysis. There was no indication any other vehicle was involved, or that Boyer swerved to avoid something in the road. Boyer and a driver who stopped to help were able to get three children aged 4, 5, and 6, out of their car seats and away from the fire. They struggled to free Grindstaff because his foot was trapped in the wreckage. He died in the fire. Boyer and the children were taken to the hospital and were treated for cuts and abrasions. They suffered no life-threatening injuries. Christie Boyer has been driving for the Transportation Authority for five years.
