The ice storm that swept through parts of Western North Carolina yesterday morning had emergency crews dealing with toppled trees and power outages. The freezing rain coated tree limbs and power lines with ice. In some cases the weight of that ice was too much, snapping branches and lines. Progress and Duke Energy reported about 9,000 people without power yesterday. The ice also caused some slick road conditions early in the morning but troopers say there were no major accidents. Yancey, Mitchell and Avery schools planned a 3hr delay and later closed. Today Mitchell and Avery County Schools are operating on a 2 hour delay. All others were back on a regular schedule.
