Avery Commissioners Vote No to Brewery

The Avery County Commissioners last week voted 3-2 not to allow a brewery to move into the old Banner Elk School facility after a record number of citizens showed up at the boardroom to protest the proposed small alcohol producer.  Avery County has budgeted $140,000 for an incubator for the facility but the Town of Banner Elk has not yet issued a permit. Numerous people spoke against the incubator with only one person speaking up for the brewery.  Following the meeting many stated that they were pleased with the vote and that the brewery had been stopped, but they were not happy about their tax money subsidizing the incubator. Many in attendance think future businesses need to purchase their own land and build with their own money and not use taxpayer funds.
