Details: Paul James Atkins of Spruce Pine went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 21, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Welzie and Lucy Gardner Atkins. He was also preceded in death by his son: Tony James Atkins; 3 brothers: Bernard, Vernon and Vaughn Atkins; and, 1 sister: Vida Carroll. Paul was a lifetime member of Estatoe Church of God, where he served as Treasurer.
Surviving are his wife of 9 years: Peggy Thomas Atkins; 3 daughters: Shelia Kimbrell and husband, Larry, of Rock Hill, SC, Peggy Louise Atkins of Lancaster, SC and Paula Atkins of Gastonia; 1 daughter-in-law: Joyce Atkins of Rock Hill; 1 stepson: Charles Nanney, Jr. and wife, Tammy, of Spruce Pine; 2 stepdaughters: Karen Stewart and husband, John, of Spruce Pine and Pam Banner and husband, Stephen, of Marion; 1 brother: Clarence Atkins and wife, Glenda, of Spruce Pine; 1 sister: Gladys Rathbone and husband, Richard, of Spruce Pine; a lifelong best friend: Franklin D. Forbes and wife, Lillian, of Micaville; 3 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and, his loving dachshund of 11 years: Knotty.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM Friday at Estatoe Church of God. Revs. Wayne Braswell and Chris Rathbone will officiate. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
Flowers are welcome and appreciated, or memorials may be made to the Estatoe Church of God Building Fund.
