In our area Madison County had the biggest decline in its jobless rate, a 1.7-percent drop in the last month, from 10 percent to 8.4. In the Tri-County Area Avery County saw its rate fall from 13.7 percent to 12.8, Mitchell’s went from 15.5 percent to 14.9 and in Yancey County the unemployment rate dropped from 13.9 to 12.9 percent in February.
McDowell County’s rate fell by .8 percent to 11.2 percent in February while Buncombe County saw joblessness creep down to 7.5 percent for the month.
Graham County had the highest unemployment rate at 20.2 percent, while Orange County had the lowest at 5.9. Rockingham County was the only county in the state to see an increase in the jobless rate, moving up from 11.7 percent in January to 12.0 percent in February.
