Mountain Heritage senior Samm Chandler has signed a letter of intent to play college basketball at Averett College in Danville Virginia, a NCAA Division III school.
The Averett Lady Cougars play in the USA South Conference under the guidance of Coach Liz Hickey.
Chandler, who recently played in the Blue-White All-Star Game and was voted to the All-WNC second team, joined an elite group of athletes at the Yancey County School who have reached the 1000 point milestone on the basketball court with an outstanding senior season.
Samm, who was the Lady Cougars leading scorer this season, scoring 390 points while averaging 15.6 points per game in leading the team to the Western 2A Sectional title game and a 27-3 record, finished with 1048 points for her career as a four year varsity player for the Lady Cougars.
Heritage Coach Susie Shelton had high praise for her senior star- “Samm has put in a lot of hard work and a lot of time over the past four year and we sure are going to miss her around here. It is good to see that hard work pays off and allow another one of our players a chance to play at the next level and get a good education.” Coach Shelton said that Samm has been a good leader for the Lady Cougars both on and off the court. “She was a true teammate,” Shelton said.
Samm is the daughter of Karen and Frankie Chandler. She considered several offers from other schools but choose to continue her basketball career at Averett College because it offers her a chance to follow her dreams in the medical field. Sam currently has a weighted GPA of 4.5 at Mountain Heritage and plans to enter pre-med.
