The baseball program at Mountain Heritage had once of its most successful seasons on the diamond ever in 2013 as the Cougars made it to the second round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs before being knocked off by a very good Smoky Mountain team.
Team members, Coaches, parents gathered recently to pay tribute to the team where head coach Rick Flynn presented the following awards and noted the recipient’s accomplishments:
MVP- Kaleb McCurry (junior pitcher) All-Conference
-Led the team in nearly every pitching category while hitting .314
-1.61 ERA (1st on team) in 65.33 innings pitched
-80 strikeouts (1st on team) 1.22 per inning
-Held opponents to .181 batting average (1st on team)
-Had a .959 fielding percentage
-Winning pitcher in Cougars 1st state playoff win since 1998.
Cougar Award- Dakota Wilson (senior catcher) All-Conference
-Caught every inning this season with the exception of one for the Cougars
-Hit .317 (3rd on the team)
-19 hits (tied for the team lead)
-Recorded 142 putouts (1st on the team)
Rookie of the Year- Gray McCurry (sophomore 3rd baseman)
-Only underclassman to start on the team and led in many hitting categories
-Hit .365 (1st on the team)
-His slugging percentage was .577 (1st on the team)
-19 hits (tied for the team lead) with 3 triples and 1 homerun
-10 of 10 on stolen base attempts (100%)
Rookie of the Year - Andrew Hall (sophomore pinch runner)
-Valuable pinch-runner for the varsity
-Starting short stop for the JV
-had 4 stolen bases (tied for 5th on the team) on varsity.
-Had a 1.000 fielding percentage on the varsity level.
-Scored 6 runs (tied for 8th on the team) on varsity.

Junior Varsity Awards
MVP- Colton Garland (Freshman Pitcher)
-Played on both JV and Varsity teams.
-Posted a 1-1 record on Varsity in 3 appearances pitching.
-had an 1.97 ERA in 10.66 innings pitched on Varsity
-had his first varsity hit and RBI in state playoff game.
Cougar Award - Bryson Cooper (Freshman Pitcher)
-Played on both J and Varsity teams
-Led the JV team in wins as a pitcher
-Had a SAC-bunt for an RBI in his first varsity at-bat.
-Had 2 RBIs in the state playoffs.
Coach Flynn and the Cougars will return the nucleus of a very solid team in 2014 so come spring the rest of the Western Highlands Conference teams had better look out.
