Details: Vena Laws Hamby of Sawmill Hollow Road went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 21st, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Biss and Ethel Edwards Laws and the wife of the late James "Jimmy" Hamby who passed away in 1978. She was also preceded in death by 2 sisters: Lola Bennett and Opal Laws; 2 brothers: Willie and Carl Laws. Vena was a member of Mine Fork Freewill Baptist Church who worked a number of years at Ellen’s Knitting Mill and was also a cook at the AmberJack. She loved to quilt, crochet and can, loved raising her garden, but mostly loved her family.
Surviving are 2 daughters: Linda Deyton and Mona Fox and husband, James, all of Burnsville; a son, Charles Hamby and wife, Linda, also of Burnsville; a sister, Lena Mae King of Burnsville; 4 brothers: Lloyd Laws and wife, Ollie, of Burnsville, Leonard Laws and wife, Linda, of Weaverville, Howard Laws and wife, Faye, of Burnsville and JD Laws and wife, Kathy, of Burnsville; a brother-in-law, Troy Bennett of Pigeon Roost; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter, Little Vena Marie.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 25th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The Rev. Randall Robinson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the funeral service. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Bailey Hill Cemetery.
