Mission Wants to Expand MAMA to Include Site in Mitchell-Yancey County Area
Over the years many people outside of Mission Hospital’s home base in Buncombe County have benefited from the lifesaving missions flown by the Mountain Area Medical Airlift, better known as MAMA.
Now there is a campaign underway to raise more than $2 million for upgrades that coincide with the redeployment of another MAMA helicopter. The new updated medical helicopter will be based somewhere in the Mitchell-Yancey County area, leaving one remaining in Franklin and another relocating from Asheville to Hendersonville. MAMA averages 100 emergency flights per month and has made 18,000 flights since its first mission from Asheville in 1986.
The $2 million sought by Mission would provide three all-weather hangers, equipment for each helicopter, base equipment including weather radar and blood refrigerator, pilot accommodations, and the latest avionics and life-saving equipment for the helicopters.
