Nearly 600 State Board of Elections and County Election Officials gathered last week in Cary, NC for their Annual Training Conference. Yancey County Election Board members Marvin Holland and Gary Boone, along with Board Director Mary Beth Tipton and Assistant Tammey Wilson participated in representing Yancey County. The county's third board member, Joe Scott, was on vacation and will attend a later make-up session. The theme of the conference was "Administering Elections in 2013 & Beyond". Governor McCrory recently signed the Election Reform Act which will bring major changes to how we register and vote in North Carolina. Chairman Holland has stated that he and his fellow board members and director, will initiate a year of "educating" the voters of Yancey County on the provisions of this new legislation and prepare them to vote in 2014. Also during the closing session on Thursday, board member Gary Boone and 20 other local election officials were recognized for their completing all of the requirements for accreditation from the NC Certification in Elections Program.
