Cougar Varsity WIns Big Over North Buncombe 9-10-13
Cougars Get First Win In Style
By David Grindstaff
It didn't take long for the Heritage Cougars to shake off last week's lopsided loss to 3-A powerhouse Erwin.
Heritage relied on big plays from the offense and defense to knock off North Buncombe 46-28 Friday night in the Cougars’ second contest of the season on the road.
Heritage gave up a fumble that led to a black Hawk score on North’s second series of the night, but the Cougars dominated most of the way.
Quarterback Trevor Robinson continued to run a balanced offense as the senior completed 10 of 12 throws for 157 yards and rushed the football for another 74 yards on 15 carries as the Cougars controlled the line of scrimmage en route to the win.
After opening the game with an 11-play 62 yard drive to score on a four yard Trevor Robinson run, the Cougars offense got rolling in the second quarter, scoring four straight touchdowns.
Dalton Robinson, who followed his offensive line for a game high 172 yards on 19 carries, finished off a 71 yard drive with a two yard run to put the Cougars on top 14-7 on the first play of the second quarter.
Trevor Robinson added another TD keeper five minutes later as the Heritage lead swelled to 20-7 and the span between the two rivals became even greater when the Cougar defense got into the scoring act when senior linebacker Colby Presnell recovered a Hawk fumble in the end zone to push the advantage to 26-7.
Dalton Robinson finished off the 26-point second quarter onslaught with a speedy 81 yard touchdown sprint as Heritage led 33-14 at the break.
The third quarter turned into a shootout, but Heritage was able to pull away with a touchdown in both the third and final quarter.
The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the first two minutes of the third quarter to start the second-half fireworks.
North Buncombe (0-3) opened the second half with a 76 yard bomb that trimmed the lead to 33-21. Heritage responded with a long TD pass of its own when Robinson hooked up with senior tight end Drew Hoilman on a play that covered 54 yards and increased the Cougar lead to 40-21.
The Cougars closed out the scoring on Trevor Robinson’s third touchdown run of the evening, with five minutes remaining in the contest.
Heritage will take its offensive show on the road again this week when they travel to Rosman (1-2) to take on the Tigers, a 28-14 loser at Madison (3-0) last week
