Cougars Win HomecomingBy David Grindstaff
Football games, more often than not, are won in the trenches.
Both the Cougar offensive and defensive fronts stood toe-to-toe with the West Henderson Falcons, traded punches, put them up against the ropes, and eventually put them down for the count. The defensive front threw back its share of Falcon attacks, while the offensive line provided a level of play that helped Mountain Heritage celebrate its 2013 Homecoming with a 47-31 victory this past Friday night in Burnsville.
The defensive front set the early in the 4th quarter, forcing two Falcon turnovers to turn the tide of the game.
The two teams traded punches through three quarters before the Cougars seized control and outscored their non-conference foes 14-0 in the final 12 minutes.
Two Trevor Robinson touchdown passes in the 4th quarter, the first of 28 yards to Jake McClellan and the other to Dalton Robinson from 7 yards out, coupled with a defensive shutout, allowed the Cougars to pull away from the Falcons who carried a 31-27 lead late in the third quarter before Heritage went on top for good following a one yard TD plunge by Isaac Allen.
The offense, led by Robinson who accounted for 123 yards rushing, 171 yards passing while completing 11 of 15 throws including three touchdowns, got the ball rolling after the Cougars had fallen behind 7-0 early when a Heritage fumble set West up in scoring position.
Dalton Robinson, who rushed for 69 yards on 14 carries, finished off quick 4 play 44 yard drive with a five yard touchdown run to knot the score at 7-7 early in the game.
West regained the lead later in the opening stanza with a 27 yard field goal. But the Cougars responded with a nine play 51 yard march that climaxed with another short Dalton Robinson TD run. Heritage led 13-10 after one.
After the Flacons scored on a short pass to take a 17-13 lead, the push the Cougar O-line was getting up front continued as Heritage regained the lead before halftime 19-17 when Trevor Robinson engineered a 7 play 48 yard drive that ended with a 31 yard TD toss from Robinson to Daulton Buchanan.
The back and forth continued into the second half as West regained the lead on a three yard run on their first possession of the third quarter.
A Joey Brown one yard TD run and two-point conversion pass from Trevor Robinson to Dalton Robinson put the Cougars back in front before the Falcons regained the lead 31-27 on a short run midway through the third quarter.
But the 4th quarter belonged to the Cougars who shut the Falcons out of the end zone while putting up 14 more points on the scoreboard to allow the large crowd of supporters to celebrate a Homecoming victory.
The Cougars (3-2) begin Western Highlands Conference play this Friday night on a trip to Hendersonville (2-2). Kickoff is at 7:30.
