Cougars Overpower Hendersonville in League Debut

Cougars Topple Bearcats to Win WHC Opener
by David Grindstaff
The high flying Mountain Heritage offense continued its impressive start to the 2013 season with a 36-21 win over reigning Western Highlands Conference champion Hendersonville in a road trip this past Friday night at Dietz Field.
The Cougar offense racked up 542 yards and scored 36-unanswered points to win their third-straight game, and move to 1-0 in league play.
Things started out promising for the Bearcats (2-4, 0-1 Western Highlands Conference), as Cole Cleary connected with Derrik Doyle from 30 yards out on the third play of the game, to jump out to a quick 7-0 lead.
The Heritage offense went nowhere with its first set of downs and the Bearcat offense continued to roll on its next possession, with Cleary scoring on a 26-yard run around the right side to extend the lead to 14-0.

Then the Cougars got their offense on track, as Issac Allen scored the first of the Cougars' (4-2, 1-0 WHC) five consecutive touchdowns from 8 yards out to cut the lead to 14-7.
Trailing 14-7 going into the second quarter the Cougar offensive line took over. Heritage scored 14 points before halftime to take a seven point lead at the break. Dalton Robinson got the scoring barrage underway when he snared a pass from Trevor Robinson from seven yards out and just before halftime Trevor Robinson, who rushed for 148 yards and threw for another 112 yards, broke free from 15 yards out and Heritage enjoyed its first lead of the game.
The lead would swell to 32-21 following a 20 yard TD run by Dalton Robinson, who finished with 111 yards rushing on 14 tries, and two point conversion run by Trevor Robinson.

Midway into the third quarter, the Bearcats were threatening to get back into the game before a Cleary interception at the Cougars 21-yard line ended the Hendersonville threat.
Heritage continued to grind it out and added an insurance score when Trevor Robinson spotted an open Dalton Cannon open for a 24 yard touchdown pass.

Following a badly-shanked punt by the Cougars, Cleary got lose from 38 yards out to cap the Bearcats' scoring for the evening.
Cougar kicker Tristan McCarty nailed all four of his extra point tries in the contest.

Things do not get any easier for the Cougars, as they host to Polk County (3-3, 1-0) this Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
