This week is rivalry week in the Toe River Conference as the league’s six teams square off against their in- county rivals in the final week of regular season football competition for 2013.
In Yancey County, East Yancey host Cane River, in Mitchell County Bowman host Harris and in Avery County Avery Middle and Cranberry play at ACHS.
Last week Cane River won its second game of the season in dramatic fashion as the Rebels celebrated Homecoming with an 8-7 victory over Avery Middle.
Antonio Romero fielded the second half opening kickoff at around the 30 yard line and after getting bottled up along the left sideline the sophomore QB raced 70 yards for a touchdown in front of the packed home bleachers and then ran in the two point conversion to give the Rebels their margin of victory.
The Rebel defense sealed the win in the 4th quarter when Caleb Edwards stripped a Panther ball carrier of the football and then pounced on the loose ball in the end zone for a touchback to end the Avery middle threat and preserve the one point win. For the Rebels
Cane River (2-2) goes into the game with unbeaten East Yancey (4-0) with some momentum and a positive attitude. “We will try our best to win the game but in the end we want to play hard and come out of the game healthy enough to make a run in the playoffs,” Rebel Coach Cody Tipton said. “Our guys and their guys know each other well and share many friendships. Some day they will all be Cougars and our goal as coaches is to get them ready for that opportunity when it arises,” Tipton added.
Kickoff for the Rebel-Panther game is 5:30 p.m.
