Details: Buster Sparks of the Ledger Community died Tuesday on Tuesday, October 8th at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Spruce Pine following a period of declining health.
Born on January 29, 1929 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Ace and Dollie English Sparks. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Jones Sparks who passed away in 1980. He was also preceded in death by his brothers; Newland, Harry, and Frank Sparks and his sisters; Hazel Buchanan, Edith Buchanan, Marcelle Duncan and Ruth Duncan and his stepson- in-law; Glenn Vance.
Buster was a lifelong member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church. He served as the church historian for many years, served as a Deacon, and sang in the church choir. He was the former President of the Mitchell County Historical Society. He retired from Hampshire Hosiery in Spruce Pine after thirty-five years service and later was employed for fifteen years with the Mitchell County Recycling Department. He had several poems and pictures published in various national publications.
Buster Sparks leaves behind his wife; Irene Calhoun Sparks of Bakersville; his daughter, Pam S. Pitman and husband, Chris of Bakersville; his step-daughter; Lila Hoilman and husband, John of Bakersville; his grandchildren; Mallory Pitman of Raleigh and Jesse Pitman of Bakersville; his step-grandchildren; Scott Vance and wife, Jamie of Bluff City, TN, Tim Vance and wife, Jessica of Newland and Marsha Vance of Bakersville; his step-great grandchildren; Stacey, Turner, Gracie, Nathan, Lucas, Kayden, and Kaleb; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service Buster Sparks will be conducted on Thursday, October, 10, 2013 at 7:30 pm at the Bear Creek Baptist Church with the Rev’s. Chris Rathbone and Darrin Waldroup officiating. Graveside services and interment will be Friday, October 11, 2013 at 11:00 am in the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm at Bear Creek Baptist Church.
