Vehicle Property Tax Now Must Be Paid When Purchasing License Tag
If your current license plate expires December 31, 2013, or prior, you will be required to pay the property tax on the vehicle in addition to the license fee in order to obtain your license plate. This law was passed in May by the NC House and is now in effect. Since the Division of Motor Vehicles will not receive the license plate assignments for 2014 until November or December, they will not be able to notify the individuals of this change until the information to purchase their plate for 2014 is mailed in December. This notification is so you will be prepared to pay the county property tax for the vehicle when you purchase your 2014 license plate. Property tax can be calculated by utilizing the web estimator tool found on at www.ncdot.gov/dmv/vehicle/tagtax/. Click on the Vehicle Tax Estimator and follow the prompts.
