Yancey Senior Center Gets Funding

Funding to construct a new Senior Center was presented to the Yancey County Committee on Aging last week as Executive Director Vivian Hollifield and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Bryan Peterson, accepted a ceremonial certificate of funding from USDA State Director Randall Gore. The 10,000 square foot senior center project was made possible because of federal, state and local funding with the USDA Rural Development providing a low interest loan of $930,000 and the High Country Council of Government contributing $500,000 through a community development block grant from the NC Department of Commerce.  The new facility, which comes with a price tag of $1.5 million, will allow the center to expand programs and services for the county’s aging population. Some funding still needs to be raised for decks, furnishing and other items.
