The old Landmark Lumber building on Greenwood Road, will most likely be condemned and torn down, according to Town Manager Richard Canipe. The rundown structure near Ingles Supermarket was originally forced to close due to flooding and now is in danger of collapsing onto the nearby roadway. If condemned, the property, which is located in a flood plain, would have to be cleaned up at the expense of the Town. Because Spruce Pine did not receive any funds after the flood from FEMA, the Town could use or sell the part of the property that is deemed usable according to Town Attorney Lloyd Hise. Canipe said that the board is ready to move forward with the condemnation process and Hise added that the Town would need to give the current property owners a 60 day notice to make suitable improvements on the property or it would be condemned.
