Area towns are beginning to receive their Powell Bill funds for street repair. Spruce Pine will receive over $84,000 to maintain 24.19 miles of streets. Burnsville will receive over $53,600 for 11.7 miles of roadway maintained by the town. The money is a part of the Powell Bill Fund which is being distributed to municipalities across the state. The money has to be used to build or maintain local town streets and sidewalks. Powell Bill funding comes from revenues generated by state gas tax and other highway user fees. The amount each town receives is based on population and number of street miles maintained.
