Details: Josephine Alma Woody passed on Friday, November 1st. Jo was born May 10, 1932, the first child and only daughter of Floyd W. Woody and Lelia Mae Cox Woody. She graduated from Harris High School in Spruce Pine, NC.
Jo was a civilian historian for the US Air Force at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia; at the time the US Space Program was in its infancy and headquartered there. She returned to North Carolina and continued in Federal Civil Service with the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, NC. She left her career to care for her father and run the family business in Spruce Pine. She also managed the Spruce Pine Mineral and Gem Festival for the Mitchell County Chamber of Commerce for many years. She served as a volunteer, and later, as an employee, of the Spruce Pine Public Library. She was a writer, a poet, and a member of the local writers’ group.
The focus of Jo’s life was her family and friends. Jo selflessly gave her time and efforts, and often sacrificed her own needs, to make sure other people had the comfort and caring to make their lives easier and ensure that their needs were met. Her unwavering dedication to the joy and well-being of the people she loved was bestowed upon members of no less than four generations. A lifelong Christian Scientist, and a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Jo was a devout Christian. She took great comfort in the Bible and, throughout her life, was an example and reflection of God’s grace and love.
Jo is survived by her three brothers, Gene Woody and his wife, Patsy, of Crystal River, Florida; Jimmy Woody and his wife, Lynn, of Charleston, South Carolina; and Art Woody and his wife, Jenny, of Richmond, Virginia. She had six nieces and nephews, and six great nieces and great nephews.
