Mitchell Adds Additional Social Worker
In an effort to address the need of a growing number of foster kids in the county, Mitchell Commissioners last week voted unanimously to add another full time social worker at the Department of Social Services. With 46 kids in foster care in the county and a rising number of reported cases that have to be investigated, commissioners elected to fund a full time position at the Mitchell DSS Office to help with the situation. State guidelines recommend a workload of ten cases per social worker but currently the DSS staff in Mitchell County is handling 23 cases per worker. A full time position will cost $47,661 a year with the county paying 60 percent of the salary and the state covering the rest. Commissioners point to the growing amount of substance abuse in the county as a reason for the high amount of case loads for DSS.
