Mitchell County Awarded $415,000 Grant

The Mitchell County Economic Development Commission is pleased to announce Mitchell County has been awarded a $415,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission. The purpose of the grant is for construction of an access road for the new industrial site located in Spruce Pine, NC.  The process began in March of 2013 when Mitchell County EDC Board members and Mitchell County Commissioners met with ARC officials in Raleigh and Spruce Pine to explore possible funding for the access road. The building of the access road has been identified as a key component in preparing the site for hosting an existing industry expansion or the recruitment of a new industry.  The road will provide access to a 14.71 acre tract that currently is under development. This industrial site will be the key piece in the strategy for moving forward with economic development for Mitchell County, stated Bill Slagle, current interim director for Mitchell County EDC.  The staff at the Appalachian Regional Commission’s office and the NC Dept of Transportation have been vital partners in achieving this result, stated Slagle.
