Mitchell Schools Hires New Officer

To address a growing need for the presence of law enforcement in county schools to protect the kids, Mitchell County Schools has decided to hire an additional Student Resource Officer. The School Board voted to hire Bakersville Police Chief Justin Biddix as the district’s new full time Student Resources Officer.  Biddix will bring the number of School Resource Officers in the county to two with plans to station one officer at Mitchell High while the other will have an everyday presence at both Bowman and Harris Middle Schools.  Student Resource Officers are used primarily as preventative measures as they monitor schools for any disturbances and to investigate any problems brought to their attention by the school principals. In addition to their duties during school hours, the officers will also be present at the majority of sporting events.
