Details: Ruth Etta "Ruthie" Greene Houston was born on March 9, 1914 to Gertrude Rhyne Greene and Thomas in Spear, NC. Known worldwide as “Ruthie” in THE YEAR OF THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS TREE, she and her husband, James Myron Houston ran Sunny Brook Store, later Sunny Brook Bookstore in Avery County, north of Spruce Pine. She died on Wednesday, January 15th in the loving care of Care Partners Hospice of Asheville.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Gloria Houston of Asheville, and Jerry and Cheryl Houston of Charlotte. Grandchildren Diane & Randy Gainforth, and Julie & Dan Floen, Tampa, Florida; Jennifer & Joe Barbara of Charlotte, and Jordan Trish Houston of Atlanta also survive. Great - grandchildren are Laurel Floen, Emily Gainforth, Ben Barbara and Grant Houston. Her sister, Wilma Greene Heaton of Spruce Pine, and Samantha Murchison of Winston Salem are part of her family She leaves behind a large circle of extended family, “adopted” children, friends, correspondents, and admirers world wide.
Visitation services begin at 5 pm on Friday, January 17th at Webb Funeral Home, Spruce Pine, followed by a memorial service at Pine Grove Methodist Church on Highway 19E four miles north of Spruce Pine at 2 pm on Saturday, January 18. Burial will be in Yellow Mountain Cemetery, Plumtree, NC at 11 AM Saturday morning.
Guests at either service are requested to refrain from fragrances, hair sprays, and cigarette residue.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made as per her 100th birthday request on YouTube as “Ruthie’s Plea” to help pay the national debt at
any Appalachian State University teaching scholarship fund or the Liomyrsarcoma Research Foundation.
