Mitchell Mountaineer Head Football Coach Resigns

The Mitchell County School System; Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Richard A. Spurling; and Mitchell High School Athletic Director, Jamie Bell announce their acceptance of the resignation of Head Varsity Football Coach, Russell Barnett.  Barnett has served as the head varsity football coach for the past seven years.  During his tenure the 2010 Mountaineer football team advanced to the regional championship game and lost to the eventual state champions, Albemarle.   Also in 2010, Barnett was selected as the Coach of the Year in Western North Carolina.  Under his guidance in 2011, the Mountaineers set the record for most single season wins with twelve.  Prior to being named head varsity football coach, Barnett spent fourteen years as an assistant football coach and three years as an assistant baseball coach.  Barnett also served as the Head Varsity Men’s Basketball Coach for three seasons from 1998-2000 where he posted a record of 56-25. Coach Barnett said "I decided to put my family first.  My decision was not easy as I have dedicated twenty-one years to coaching at the high school.  I would like to thank the parents, fans, coaches, and players who have supported me.  I would also like to thank Mitchell High School and the Mitchell County Schools for giving me the opportunity to coach and I wish the best for the team and the new coach."
