Cougar JV teams head into the second half of their conference schedule poised to make runs at the league titles.
The Lady Cougar JV had an up and down week with a narrow loss to Hendersonville, 38-34, and a blowout win over Polk County, 38-15.
Heritage battled Hendersonville to a 7-7 tie after the first 7 minutes of play and the Lady Cougars found themselves behind 12-10 at the half after the Lady Bearcats scored the final eight points of the second quarter.
After falling even further behind to start the second half, Heritage knotted things up at 28-28 on a three pointer by Kassie Gilley midway through the third.
Late in the 4th quarter Hendersonville went to the free throw line frequently and made it count, hitting four free throws in the final minute to escape with a 38-34 victory.
Hayleigh Fox led the team in scoring with 8 points while Destiny Whitt added 7 and Sierra Ballew chipped in 4 points for the Lady Cougars.
The Cougar JV won both of their home games easily last week. Heritage topped Hendersonville 55-40 and blasted Polk County 63-33.
In a win over Hendersonville on Tuesday in Burnsville the Cougars jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter behind seven quick points from Daniel Shepherd.
Hendersonville narrowed the gap to 29-24 at the half with some hot shooting from beyond the arc.
In the 4th quarter, leading by four points with three minutes to go the Cougars spread the floor and made the Bearcats chase and foul. This allowed Heritage to pull away with Nick Chandler scoring ten 4th quarter points as the sophomore guard hit all six of his free throws down the stretch.
Chandler finished with 19 points while Daniel Shepherd wound up with 13 and Bryson Cooper and Isaac Franks scored 6 points apiece in the win over the Bearcats.
Heritage will travel to Owen Tuesday for a WHC game. JV action begins at 4 p.m.
