The shooting of a man by a Mitchell County Sheriff’s deputy during a hostage situation in May of last year has been ruled justified by state officials. The action Deputy Chris Workman took that day in shooting John D. Hampton of Erwin, Tenn. was found to be within law enforcement standards by the district attorney’s office following a routine investigation by the SBI. Deputies were called to a hostage situation at the Wagon Master Trailer Park in Spruce Pine on May 23, 2013 where Hampton was holding Mercedes Potts, also of Erwin, at gunpoint. Hampton was shot in the face and was treated for his injuries before being taken into custody. He is currently serving 10 years in prison for his actions in the standoff that lasted for more than three hours.
