A glider plane crash yesterday left a pilot stuck in a tree off the ground. The glider was tethered to a plane that had taken off from Shiflet Field in Marion. It went down in Yancey County after being released. Emergency workers and fire departments were called to the scene near Big Ridge Road in the South Toe section around 9:30am and found the glider stuck in a tee. The pilot, 66 year old Jay Campbell of Camden South Carolina was conscious and alert after the crash and was airlifted to Johnson City. Five fire departments, an EMS unit and French Broad Electric worked to free Campbell-dangerously close to power lines using a bucket truck and a front end loader.
