A Spruce Pine man has been charged in connection in the deaths of two passengers riding in a vehicle he was operating that wrecked on Hwy. 19E in September of 2013. Twenty-six–year-old Jeremy Wayne Greene of Biggerstaff Road was driving left of center on Oak Avenue in Spruce Pine on the evening of September 17th when he reportedly drove through a grassy area on the shoulder of Hwy 19E causing his vehicle to overturn across the highway, ejecting both of the passengers in the process. Twenty-five-year-old Jeremy Rumfelt and his 57-year-old mother Vicki Rumfelt both died as results of injuries sustained in the crash. Greene, who was not ejected in the accident, was airlifted to Mission Hospital following the wreck. He has been charged with manslaughter and is currently being held in jail under an $80,000 secured bond and a $100,000 unsecured bond. Following an investigation, police say speed was a contributing factor in the accident but found that no drugs or alcohol were involved.
