Details: Elizabeth McArthur McFarland Bowditch of Valdese passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home Thursday March 6, 2014.
      Mrs. Bowditch was born June 30, 1918 in Cumberland County, NC to the late Malcolm A. McFarland and Elizabeth Overton McFarland. She was a graduate of Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, NC, Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA, and Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.  She taught in the North Carolina Public School System for 29 years in Mitchell County at Bowman and Tipton Hill High Schools and Burke County at Salem and Valdese High Schools and in eastern North Carolina before marriage, and then served as guidance counselor at Valdese Jr. High until retirement in 1983. During her teaching career she also coached basketball and cheerleading.
      During her life, Mrs. Bowditch, a devout Christian, was an active member of 3 Presbyterian congregations: The Church of the Covenant where she grew up and was married in Spring Lake, NC, Vians Valley Presbyterian Church in Loafers Glory, NC where she taught Sunday School, led Vacation Bible Schools, led an outpost Sunday School at Mine Fork, NC, served as District Chairman of Holston Presbytery for 3 years from whom she received the Women of the Church Honorary Life Membership in 1952, and the Waldensian Presbyterian Church in Valdese, NC where she served as an elder, was a member of the French Circle and participated for many years in a weekly prayer group. After her husband Edwin Bowditch, died, she carried on his ministry through Yokefellows at Western Youth Institute in Morganton, NC. Mrs. Bowditch was instrumental in helping many people have a meaningful and fulfilling life through her church ministry, teaching, volunteer work and friendship.
      She was also an avid master gardener, who loved growing fruits and vegetables which she preserved and shared with her family and friends. She believed in enjoying what the Lord had given her by not wasting a bite. She also loved to sew and made many clothes for her family and was a participant in the Home Extension Club for many years. She participated in the OWLS luncheons and volunteered in many capacities in the community. She also loved to watch ACC basketball on television. 
      In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Edwin Abbott Bowditch.
      Survivors include her children, Martha Bowditch of Philadelphia, PA; David Bowditch and wife Debbie of Valdese; and Rachel VonHarten  and husband Will of Morganton; her grandchildren, Nicole Huffman and husband Michael and David Bowditch and two great-grandchildren, Cody and Shelby Huffman.
      Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday March 10, 2014 at Waldensian Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Kevin Frederick officiating; and at 3:00 P.M. Monday at Vians Valley Presbyterian Church, Bakersville, N.C. with Rev. Neil Payne officiating, and burial following in the Vians Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00-6:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.
