The story behind the race written by Adam Burleson :
5 months into our pregnancy my wife and I received a test result stating that there was a 99% chance our baby girl would be born with Down syndrome.  We were scared and uncertain, but through great support from family and friends and Gods overwhelming peace we moved forward with a new positive outlook.  There was no reason to worry because God was in control.  One of the first reads that was sent to us was a short story called "Welcome to Holland".  This story was the inspiration for our beautiful baby's name we felt so blessed that God sent her to us regardless of any test result.
The short story WELCOME TO HOLLAND was written by Emily Perl Kingsley and describes the experience of raising a child with a disability.  She says it is like planning a trip to Italy.  You buy the books, learn the language, and get very excited.  But, when getting off the plane you realize that you have arrived in Holland.  You have dreamed of going to Italy your whole life.  But after buying new guide books, learning the new language, and meeting a whole new group of people you realize that Holland is just a different place.  It's slower paced and less flashy but after you've been there you realize that Holland has windmills, tulips and even Rembrandts.  If you spend your whole life mourning that you didn't go to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special and lovely things about Holland.

The purpose of the "Run For Holland" is to raise awareness in our community about Down syndrome.  Specifically, to raise awareness for parents who have had or are having a child born with a physical or mental disability.  We want to show these parents that having a child with Down syndrome or any other disability is not the end of the world, it is the beginning of a wonderfully different, more fulfilling universe.
