Spruce Pine Main Street Wants to Purchase Former Pinbridge Coliseum

The Spruce Pine Main Street organization has asked for help from the town and the county in an effort to acquire the former Pinebridge Coliseum in order to convert it into a community recreation facility. The project may potentially include three full length basketball courts, an indoor walking track, an indoor driving range and mat space for sports such as gymnastics and wrestling. Main Street Manager Starli McDowell went before the town board in Spruce Pine this week asking them to consider a partnership with Main Street to help purchase the building and surrounding property which has a price tag of $300,000. McDowell said that Main Street has already raised around $210,000 towards the purchase through donations and from funds provided by the Spruce Pine Rotary Club and the Phillips Foundation. Spruce Pine Mayor Phillip Hise suggested that McDowell meet with Mitchell County Commissioners and the EDC to come up with firm commitments from them by the next Town Board meeting before a decision can be made about the potential partnerships.
