Springer Speaks to Spruce Pine Rotary

On Thursday, March 13, members of the Rotary Club of Spruce Pine received a very informative program, provided by Assistant District Attorney, Britt Springer, from Boone, who was introduced by Rotarian Bill Sweetser. She spoke of her office’s efforts to reach the youth of Mitchell County, as well as those of Avery, Madison, Watauga, and Yancey counties. As the chief prosecutor, Ms. Springer has witnessed emerging problems with an increasing number of young people being involved in the court system. This is the reason her office is working diligently to educate high school and middle school students about decisions they make that could follow them the rest of their lives. She says they chiefly address three issues, cell phone usage, cyber-bullying, and prescription drugs. After a lengthy dialog by law enforcement officers with students about these matters, schools have reported a decrease in the problems. Ms. Springer noted that her goal is to educate students about the repercussions of their decisions so that our communities will be safer for everyone.
