Former Yancey School Superintendent Dies



Dr. Sidney “Chip” Zullinger, died Tuesday night, April 1, after suffering a heart attack Monday. At the time of his death he was the Chief Elementary School Officer in Houston Independent School District. in Texas. Sidney “Chip” Zullinger served as Yancey County’s School Superintendent for two years, beginning in July 1984. At that time at age 34, he was the youngest superintendent in North Carolina. 

Zullinger earned his B.A. in 1973 from Mars Hill College, his M.A. in educational administration from Western Carolina University in 1979; and received a doctorate in educational administration from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1991.

He served as superintendent for school systems in North Carolina, South Carolina, Wyoming, Virginia, and Colorado, and executive director of an educators’ union in South Carolina.

Funeral arrangements are pending, 
 
Zullinger has many friends, relatives, former students and co-workers in Yancey County who are saddened by his death.
