Details: Dr. Sidney ‘Chip’ Zullinger, III of Houston, Texas and Manassas, VA passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 1, 2014 in Houston, Texas.
     A native of South Carolina, he was a son of the late Sidney Zullinger, Jr. and Kathryn Rathbone Zullinger.
     At the time of his death, he was Chief Elementary School Officer in Houston Independent School District in Texas.  He earned his B.S. in 1973 from Mars Hill College, his M.A. in Educational Administration from Western Carolina University in 1979, and received a Doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1991.
     A teacher, coach, principal and superintendent, he touched thousands of student’s lives.  Chip served as Yancey County School Superintendent for two years beginning in 1984, and served as superintendent for school systems in Charleston and Denver, among others in North Carolina, South Carolina, Wyoming, Virginia and Colorado and Executive Director of an educator’s union in South Carolina.  A recently released documentary “If You Build It” focuses on an innovative class formed in rural Eastern North Carolina.  The director of this film described Zullinger as a “renegade school superintendent, a great thinker and a steamroller when it came to getting kids the education they deserve.”
     Surviving are his wife; Pam Young Zullinger of Manassas; two sons: Sidney Zullinger, IV of Manassas and Zach Zullinger of Greensboro.
     A memorial service will be held at 5 P. M. Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home.  Rev. Ricky Ray will officiate.
     The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. 
     In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
