Driving the length of the Blue Ridge National Parkway has been ranked the fifth best National Park experience by two travel writers. Kay and David Scott - authors of the acclaimed travel books Guide to the National Park Areas: Western States and Guide to the National Park Areas: Eastern States say the 469 mile route stretching from Virginia thru North Carolina is the experience of a lifetime. Many people cruise the route every year, enjoying the beauty, the limited access points and no commercial signs or vehicles. Short drives off of the Parkway allow you to experience the local communities. Overlooks and established picnic areas are located all along the roadway as are many camping facilities. The Parkway accesses Mitchell County at NC226 South and Yancey County at Hwy 80 South.
