Students in the Mars Hill University (MHU) Student Government Association have recently partnered with Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Asheville to give the gift of music for patients in the Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit of Mission Hospital.
The two organizations have cooperatively raised funds to refurbish, tune, and repair a piano which the University has donated to the unit. The piano originally sat in a lobby of Fox Dormitory on the campus, and had fallen into disrepair from lack of use.
Savannah Maynor is president of the sophomore class at MHU. She said, "Music is one of my passions, and I thought it would be fantastic for someone else to experience the power of music with this piano. However, this particular piano was in need of some tuning and other repairs.”
Enter the Student Government Association (SGA) and Buffalo Wild Wings. Maynor encouraged her fellow SGA members to take on raising money to get the piano repaired and tuned. SGA members, in cooperation with Buffalo Wild Wings in Asheville, then planned a “Mars Hill Mission Night.” On March 21, the restaurant donated 10% of proceeds from all patrons who had an ID from either MHU or Mission Hospital or a fundraiser coupon. Together with additional donations, the students have raised approximately $250 toward the repair of the piano.
“Music is so important for healing, especially for our older patients,” said Jennifer McDuff, Geriatric Mental Health Clinician for Mission Hospital. “Some patients will respond to music when they won’t respond to any other communication or therapy.” The piano will be used for music therapy, as well as for the personal enjoyment of the patients.
