Dig In! Garden Tour and Demo 5/2

DIG IN!  â€‹Yancey Community Garden located on BolensCreek, Burnsville, across from Bolens Creek Baptis Church will have a Garden Tour on Friday, May 2nd at 4:40 pm followed by equipment demo at 5:30. Weather related make up date is Friday, May 9th, same times.

Please join NC Cooperative Extension and Dig In! Community Garden and for a joint field demonstration of available shared-use equipment available to local growers.  We will demonstrate how to use the plasticulture equipment, including a bedding machine and water-wheel transplanter, as well as a mobile irrigation system.

This season, Dig In! will experiment with different bedding systems, which we will discuss and demonstrate during the event.  These include a raised bed system with natural mulch, landscape fabric, and black plastic mulch.  All systems will be irrigated.

We will also demonstrate the use of a BCS walk-behind tractor.  This machine is capable of plowing, tilling, mowing, shaping raised beds and much more.  It is better suited to large garden situations or small-scale commercial farming.  The diversity of implements offered for this machine makes it a useful tool that can be customized to fit individual farm needs.

Dig In! Community Garden managers will offer tours of the garden before the demo day beginning at 4:30pm.  The tour will cover sustainable agricultural practices and design models of the garden.

There is no charge for this event, however, registration is recommended so that we can properly plan. To register, please contact the Yancey County Extension Center at 828-682-6186.   For questions related to Dig In! Community Garden please contact farm manager, Kathleen Wood, at diginfarmer@gmail.com and for directions: http://www.diginyancey.org/DigInContact.html
