Teen Shot in McDowell

McDowell County sheriff's deputies are looking for a man who reportedly shot a teenager outside the boy's home in Old Fort Wednesday night. Sheriff's deputies were called to a residence at 284 Boulder Rock Drive around midnight, where they found 13-year-old Ralph Walker Hughes suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper left arm.
The teen was at home with his 14-year-old brother and their parents were at work according to reports. The victim told investigators that he heard a noise outside, so he grabbed a gun and went to investigate. He said he was met by a tall, skinny black man who walked awkwardly. The man reportedly shot Hughes in the arm and fled on foot through the woods toward Moffitt Hill Road. The teen was taken to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, where he was treated for his injury and released. Anyone with information concerning the incident is asked to call the McDowell County Sheriff's Office at 828-652-4000 or 828-652-2235 or McDowell County Crimestoppers at 65-CRIME.
