Timberlake and Buck Stove Part of Pinehurst Experience

The distinctive Bob Timberlake design and furniture brand will be prominent throughout the Pinehurst area this month as  the community prepares to host the 2014 U.S. Men’s and Women’s Open Championships, especially at the Moore County Airport, which will be a gateway to Moore County and Pinehurst for the championships.

In addition, the proud Lexington, North Carolina native was named the Honorary Chairman of the “Art Fore Golf” project in the Village of Pinehurst, which is a collection of larger-than-life golf ball statues painted by local, national and worldwide artists to raise monies for charity.

Many of Bob Timberlake licensed partners, including Century Furniture, Mohawk Home Rugs, Wildwood Lamps & Accents, Earthstone Products, Buck Stove, and Dixie Seating Company, have joined Timberlake to provide products to enhance the arrival and departure experience of the more than 12,000 professional golfers, corporate guests and golf enthusiasts who will arrive in Moore County through the local airport.  Included in the enhanced airport terminal décor is a collection of Bob Timberlake’s licensee products including designer furniture and fixtures, custom rugs, patio stone and Timberlake prints and original artwork depicting his fondness for his home state.
“Bob has a wonderful appreciation for the rich history and traditions of the Pinehurst area,” stated Jim Slagle, President of Bob Timberlake, Inc.  “Our goal was to work with the airport to provide a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for people that will arrive from around the world for the Opens.  We wanted to assist in providing a true southern hospitality experience.”

For many arriving at the Moore County Airport, this will be their first visit.
“The goal of the Airport Authority and staff is to showcase our airport and its gateway image to our customers,” said William H. Bateman, Chairman of the Moore County Airport Authority. “We have worked with local companies to assist the airport staff in developing and executing a master plan for enhancing the arrival/departure experience at the airport and to give these corporations and individuals a reason to return to our community after the U.S. Opens are completed.  We are excited to have participation from many North Carolina-based companies like Bob Timberlake, Inc, that will assist us in this endeavor.”

Timberlake, the internationally-acclaimed artist, agreed to be the Honorary Chairman for “Art Fore Golf” project, which was developed to serve as a celebration leading up to the June grand finales for the 2014 U.S. Open Championships in Pinehurst.
His stunning one-of-a-kind painted golf ball, titled “Pride of North Carolina,” features the iconic symbols for the state of North Carolina: the dogwood blossom, the NC state flower and the vibrant red Cardinal, the state bird. The Timberlake golf ball is topped with a replica statue of Pinehurst’s legendary Putterboy.   The ball will be on display through the month of June at the Carolina Hotel and will be auctioned in July with the proceeds going to benefit the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center.
“I am honored to be part of the unique and worthy project in the Village of Pinehurst,” said Timberlake.  “Pinehurst is a very special place that is all about history, tradition and beauty, and I am excited to be associated with this project and with our exciting efforts at the Moore County Airport. The connection with many regional and national charities is a wonderful concept.”

The Old Sport Gallery, which is located in the Village, will feature several of Timberlake’s prints and original works of art for sale during the U.S. Open weeks.

About the Moore County Airport: The Moore County Airport was established in 1929 when the Tufts family, founders and operators of the Pinehurst Resort, opened a dirt runway and named it “Knollwood Airport.”  The airport was acquired by Moore County in 1935 and was later leased to the U.S. Army Air Corps until 1945, when it transitioned from a military airfield to a commercial airfield.  The Pinehurst-Southern Pines Airport, with Piedmont Airlines as the primary commercial carrier, operated commercial service until the late 1960s.  The airport was renamed the Moore County Airport in 1980, and commercial air service returned in 1991 with CCAir, operating as USAir Express providing round trip service to Charlotte, North Carolina.  Passenger traffic peaked in 1998 with over 50,000 passengers arriving and departing from Moore County.  Commercial service was discontinued following the disasters of September 11, 2001, which impacted commercial air travel around the country.
Today, the Moore County Airport is a vibrant hub for private aircraft and corporate charter flights arriving and departing to and from Moore County.  The airport, which is operated and maintained by the Moore County Airport Authority, has recently lengthened their runway to 6,502 feet to accommodate larger business and charter aircraft.  Additional airport enhancements include additional private aircraft hangar storage space, an expanded tarmac apron of six acres of surface area for aircraft parking, expansion of passenger parking areas and renovation of the Airport terminal building.
