Josie Houchard, a third grade student at Deyton Elementary School, visited Raleigh recently to be recognized for her artistic submission to the NC Farm To School program. Josie’s creation, involving honey bees, was selected as one of 13 to be featured in the 2014-15 NC Farm to School calendar.
The contest was open to all North Carolina public school students in grades kindergarten through five. Over 3,285 entries were submitted. Entries were separated based on the student’s grade level and judged separately by grade until the final round of judging.
An awards reception took place on Friday, May 16 during the Got to Be NC Festival at the NC Fairgrounds location. North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler was present at the ceremony to congratulate all the honorees.
The NC Farm to School program has been supplying school cafeterias across the state with fresh, North Carolina grown produce since 1997. Josie's artwork will be featured in the third annual calendar promoting this program.
Josie is the daughter of Assistant Superintendent Dr. Morgen Houchard and Harris Middle School instructor Tamara Houchard. Both the administration, faculty and staff of Deyton in particular as well as Mitchell County Schools in general congratulate Josie on this impressive accomplishment.
