Lydia Holman came to Mitchell County on Christmas Day 1899 as a nurse for Professor Charles Wing and his wife in Ledger. She stayed after the Wings left and became an angel of mercy for the children and adults of Mitchell County for many years. She helped build the first hospital in the area, traveled county wide as a nurse, set up vaccinations for school kids, taught women safe food practice, bought Christmas presents for kids out of own pocket, and even served as a Justice of the Peace. She if fondly remembered by many people to this very day.
