BIG NEWS!!! THANKS TO A GRANT FROM THE DUKE ENERGY FOUNDATION, SUPER SATURDAYS SESSIONS WILL BE FREE TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE 2014 SEASON!!! (See Calendar here)
In 2014, our Super Saturdays Children's Heritage Program will run from June 14 through August 9, from 10:30am to noon.
The schedule for this year's sessions is provided below. Please plan to join us for these unique (and very fun) sessions!
July 5: JEWELRY MAKING with artist Dana Reynolds
Dana will discuss the types of gems found in this area and she'll teach the children how to use the wire wrapping technique to make their own masterpiece to take home. Free
July 12: APPLESAUCE! with orchard field manager Skip Carson
Skip will lead the children in selecting, coring, cooking, and mashing their way to homemade applesauce. Cost: Free
July 19: CLOGGING with Cole Mountain Cloggers leader Jeff Atkins
Jeff will teach the children some basic clogging steps and lead them in square dancing formations. Cost: Free
July 26: HERBAL REMEDIES with healer Margot Rossi
Margot will discuss the importance of herbal medicine in the mountains and she'll lead the children in making their own concoction to take home. Cost: Free
August 2: ART IN NATURE with naturalist Amy Weinmeister
Amy will begin with a short trip into the woods to collect natural items with which the children will then create works of art using paint and imagination. Cost: Free
August 9: WILDERNESS SURVIVAL with naturalist Tina White
Tina and her colleagues will teach the children about techniques to avoid getting lost, and what to do if they do get lost. Lots of great giveaways! Cost: Free
